The AIFA (Italian Drug Agency) issued a notice calling on pediatricians do not prescribe mucolytics under two years and to consider carefully the risk-benefit in larger ones. The initiative follows the example of France AIFA that already in April 2010, had contraindications to the use of mucolytics in children under two years, after finding serious side effects caused by the use of these medicines. The adverse reactions encountered are mainly affecting the respiratory system: worsening bronchiolitis, increased cough, vomiting sticky, dyspnoea, increased bronchial secretions, difficulty breathing. The active ingredients are involved in the privacy of AIFA acetylcysteine, carbocysteine, Ambroxol, bromexina, sobrerol, neltenexina, and erdosteina telmesteina. The note covers both mucolytics for rectal use and those for oral use.
